A group of armed men broke into a church in Port-au-Prince this Sunday (08/10/2023) during a church service, with a robbery resulting in the death of one of the attackers and a Haitian police officer, and the kidnapping of at least one person.
According to reports, the aim of the raid was to kidnap Pastor Julio Volcy, head of the church called “Rendez-vous Christ” at Delmas 75, in the hills of the capital, but the religious security forces realized in time that they could remove him the terrain.
Although the priest’s kidnapping attempt failed, they took one of the bodyguards protecting Volcy with them, with no further details revealed.
“The bandits have entered the church,” the priest wrote on his Facebook page as a cry for help before the break-in by the armed men, who wore the old uniform of one of the National Police units and used police tactics to break in. in the temple, which is frequented by middle class people.
According to authorities, the murdered police officer was identified as Marc Elie Azael and was a member of the Intervention and Maintenance of Order Corps (CIMO, for its French acronym). As for the attacker who dropped dead near the church, reports only stated that he was wearing a black suit.
