Hamas condemns countries for rejecting Russian war resolution

Extremist group said positions that contradict the proposal “give a green light to Zionist occupation” and allow “more crimes.”

Hamas condemned this Tuesday (October 17, 2023) the UN Security Council’s rejection of the Russian resolution on the war between Israel and the extremist group.

In a statement published on its Telegram channel, the organization explains that positions against the proposal to establish humanitarian corridors in Gaza “give a green light to the Zionist occupation.”

The group also says the rejection allows Israel to “commit more crimes and intensify the genocidal war against more than 2 million Palestinian citizens, in blatant violation of international and humanitarian conventions, norms and laws.”

“The Palestinian Islamic resistance movement Hamas strongly condemns the positions of the countries that voted in the Security Council against the Russian draft resolution advocating a ‘humanitarian ceasefire’ to establish corridors for the aid and rescue of civilians in the Gaza Strip.”

“Hamas emphasizes that these opposing positions give the green light to the Zionist occupation, allowing it to commit more crimes and intensify the genocidal war against more than two million Palestinian citizens, in blatant violation of international and humanitarian conventions, norms and represents laws.”

The UN Security Council rejected the Russian proposal on Monday (October 16). The text called for a humanitarian ceasefire and condemned the attacks, but did not mention Hamas by name. There were 5 votes in favour, 4 against (with 3 vetoes from the US, France and the UK) and 6 abstentions, including Brazil.

The document was not adopted because any resolution submitted to the UN body requires:

  • at least 9 of the 15 member states vote in favor of approval;
  • No veto from the United Kingdom, China, France, Russia or the United States, the Council’s five permanent nations.

In addition to Russia, China, Gabon, Mozambique and the United Arab Emirates also voted in favor of the proposal. France, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States rejected the initiative. Albania, Brazil, Ecuador, Ghana, Malta and Switzerland abstained.

The Security Council will meet again this Tuesday (October 17) to vote on the Brazilian proposed resolution. Brazil, which holds the rotating presidency of the Council in October, launched a consultation process between the diplomatic representatives of the body’s member states on Friday (October 13).

The draft text speaks of condemning the “cruel terrorist attacks by Hamas” against Israel. It is also asked:

  • the release of Hamas hostages;
  • permission for humanitarian actions; It is
  • the lifting of Israel’s order to evacuate civilians from the northern Gaza Strip.
