Harmony Korine arrived at the Venice Film Festival press conference for his latest film “Aggro Dr1ft” wearing a film-inspired devilish mask and cigar in hand.
Korine was joined by “Aggro Dr1ft” visual effects artist Joao Rosa and Eric Kohn, the newly appointed head of film strategy and development at his company EDGLRD. All three wore horned masks with bee-like eyes – Korine’s was yellow, while Rosa wore a white mask and Kohn donned a black one. Throughout the conference, Korine pretended to smoke his cigar.
“We wear the masks because they’re comfortable,” Korine joked. “It gives me a scalp massage.”
In addition to discussing “Aggro Dr1ft” – an experimental action film shot entirely in infrared photography and starring Jordi Mollà and rapper Travis Scott as the deadly assassins – Korine also explained his goals for EDGLRD, which focuses not only on film but also focused on technology and design.
“We are now trying to develop a technology, we are getting very close to it. “It’s called the Dream Box,” Korine teased. “We are developing something that gives you the opportunity to simply think and then translate it into images without being asked. I just thought of a picture. So basically a dream description, a dream illustrator. We have a proof of concept, we’ve been working on it for a while and it’s really close. Pretty amazing.”
Of working with Scott, who plays a sort of apprentice to Mollà’s character, Korine said, “With his music, his energy and what he creates, he also creates a world that’s very much based on vibes.” It really kind of matched that feeling and the idea of the character.”
“Aggro Dr1ft” premieres Saturday night at the Venice Film Festival and is also scheduled to screen at the Toronto and New York film festivals.
