Transgender influencer Dylan Mulvaney admitted that “haters really wore me down for a second” after reacting to her controversial partnership with Bud Light.
There were calls around the world to boycott America’s best-selling beer after she shared a series of posts with her 11 million social media followers on April 1.
Mulvaney sparked widespread anger with the partnership content, which showed her seated in a bathtub and her face drinking from bespoke Bud Light cans.
She appeared on comedian Chelsea Handler’s podcast, Dear Chelsea, on May 4 and said she wasn’t processing the surrounding episodes.
But she revealed she was left heartbroken by those who misunderstand her as a man.

Mulvaney admitted she was crushed by the hate pile following her Bud Light posts and believes the “haters” don’t realize the impact it’s having on their mental health.
“I think a lot of these haters don’t know that the mental ramifications of being the wrong gender in the media breaks my heart because you know there are people who call me a man and I don’t feel like that right now.” don’t even process any of it,” she told Handler in a podcast episode released Thursday.
“I’m so scared to do that deep dive and know what the ramifications are and I’ll say those haters they really wore me down for a second.
“Dysphoria really does feel like a darkness that washes over you, and it’s those gender mismatch moments … that made me so sad.”
But she revealed that the fact that Handler had also received hate gave her some comfort.
Mulvaney said: “But then they came for you, Chels, and I was like, oh my god, that’s my favorite woman in the whole world and the same people that come for me come for her.
“Something clicked and I was like, ‘Oh my god, maybe what they’re saying isn’t true,’ because now I’m watching them turn off someone I love and I know their truth and I stand by it , and i love her, so maybe the same goes for me.
“It’s almost easier when it’s not about you and it’s about someone you love or enjoy and I know we haven’t met but I could actually see through your experiences with them.”
And Handler replied, “Oh wow, I love that. Yeah, I mean, I told you that a little bit before we started, but you know the haters, it’s like you’ve got a big pile of stuff, it always will.” give a few negative things that you know you need to learn to focus on positive and all the people that affect you and eventually it just rolls off your back.
“And we both know exactly how to have a good time, and you know that. I don’t think they want to see that,” Mulvaney added.

She has spoken out against the criticism she has received since coming out as a transgender woman, insisting she is not a “monster”.
Mulvaney rose to fame with her Girlhood video series, in which she documented her first year as a woman.
Bud Light sent her a can with her face on it to commemorate 365 days of her life as a woman that sparked the controversy.
She said: “It’s sad that there are still so many people trying to turn this really beautiful journey against me and twisting my words and taking things out of context.
“But at the end of the day I’m happier than ever because I can’t imagine going back to that other person. It breaks my heart to think about it.
“A lot of people don’t have a Dylan in their life to ask questions and I think that’s why I went online … I wanted to be that friend to people. I wanted to show that I’m not a monster.”
Mulvaney posted herself with the hashtag #budlightpartner while drinking Bud Light in early April 2023. She posted the content to coincide with the NCAA March Madness tournament before joking that she didn’t know what sport she was promoting.
The disastrous marketing bid has caused sales of America’s flagship beer to plummet 26 percent, even as Anheuser-Busch reported a first-quarter profit of $1.65 billion and conservatives everywhere said they were boycotting the company.
The company appears to be facing outrage and potential boycott from all sides of the political spectrum, although it’s mostly conservatives.
The partnership with Mulvaney drew backlash from some quarters when musician Kid Rock released a video of himself shooting Bud Light crates and country singers John Rich and Travis Tritt severed ties with the brand.
But media personalities like Joe Rogan and Howard Stern defended Bud Light’s decision.
Anheuser-Busch reported first-quarter earnings of $1.65 billion, beating Wall Street expectations.
The brewery posted sales of $14.21 billion during the period, which also beat forecasts, with shares up 6 percent year-to-date and 12 percent over the 12-month period.

It’s unclear if the boycott had any impact on these numbers, and if the fiscal second quarter will see a major impact on the company’s finances as the controversy and boycotts continue.
The brewery giants are now claiming that the beer can and social media posts were not “intended for production or sale to the general public”.
CEO Michel Doukeris dismissed the ad in an earnings call on Thursday, insisting the ad was “not a campaign” and that an outside agency approved it without Bud Light’s approval.
Todd Allen, most recently Budweiser’s global vice president, has been announced as Bud Light’s new vice president of marketing – after marketing vice president Alissa Heinerscheid and Blake were furloughed.
Following the April 1 release, Anheuser-Busch lost more than $6 billion in market cap in just six days.
The beer giant’s stock traded roughly with its total stock value down a little over five percent, and the company’s market cap stood at $113.33 billion.
Mulvaney has posted several videos and pictures for the paid partnership on Instagram, but it’s unclear exactly how much she paid.
Her paid partnership with Nike promoting the brand’s sports bra and leggings also caused widespread controversy.
