According to local media, Jason Carter, a surfer, was attacked Saturday morning, Maui police said in a statement.
When police arrived, rescue workers brought him to shore on a jet ski.
“Once on shore, life-saving measures were taken” until he could be transported to hospital, the police statement said, but the surfer “later succumbed to his injuries.”
Authorities closed the beach and put up warning signs warning of the presence of sharks.
Hawaii News Now reported that water conditions were “mixed” with high waves and called it the first fatal shark attack in Hawaiian waters in 2023.
