Hawks vs Heat tips and predictions

Our side and total predictions are based on our analysis of the line and total score in that game. Our best bet is our favorite pick across all markets.

Spread Analysis

The Heat came out looking just like the top seed in the East as they beat the No. 8 Hawks by 24 points on Sunday. Miami was the superior team at both ends of the court, shooting 52% from the floor (including a sizzling 18-for-38 from beyond the arc) while keeping their opponent at 39% shooting.

Atlanta actually made 12 more shots from the charity streak and still couldn’t make a dent in a massive Miami lead. Trae Young had a performance to forget, going 1-of-12 from field and 0-of-7 from 3-point range while turning the ball six times before riding jaws in the fourth quarter.

Interestingly, the 115-91 score was identical to the win the Heat imposed on the Hawks on Jan. 6. However, the other three games between these teams during the regular season were much closer, with Atlanta beating the Heat once and Miami winning the other contests by six and four points.

The Hawks will again miss center Clint Capela, but the Heat have listed power forward PJ Tucker and center Bam Adebayo as questionable. However, Adebayo has said he will play despite a quad injury, which is good news for Miami after averaging 19.1 points and 10.1 rebounds per game in the regular season while playing lockdown defense .

Even if Adebayo passes, we’d like the Hawks to keep things close at least in Game 2.

Young is just too talented to switch off in back-to-back competitions, and even if he’s nowhere near his regular-season average of 28.4 points and 9.7 assists per game, he should still be far more productive than he was on Sunday.

Though the Hawks are weak on defense, there should still be a little rebound from Miami’s red-hot shooting from deep in Game 1, and since Atlanta is filled with dead-eye shooters of its own, we’ll take it by the points.

Over/Under Analysis

That total hit the board at 217.5 and has gone up to 219, but we could see it reaching 220 by the tip. The Heat are very strong defensively, but they’ve also given important minutes to snipers like Duncan Robinson, Tyler Herro and Max Strus.

Though that helps with distance, it also puts several minus defenders on the ground against an Atlanta team filled with perimeter scoring options like Young, Danilo Gallinari, Bogdan Bogdanovic, Kevin Huerter and Deandre Hunter.

The Hawks might have walked off the field coldly in Game 1, but this is a team that finished the regular season with the second-highest offensive rating in the league.

However, they also only finished 26th in the defensive standings and the absence of their best centre-back in Capela will hurt. We’ll handle the over.

forecast: About 219 (-110 at William Hill)

best bid

Given our first two predictions, you might have guessed our favorite pick for this game: That’s right, it’s the Over on the Hawks Team Total.

As good as the Heat are defensively, towards the end of the season they became a little less efficient in this area. They allowed 108.5 ppg at 46% shooting after the All-Star break as opposed to 104.4 ppg at 44.2% shooting, which they limited opponents to before this season mark.

Now they could be missing a tough defender in Tucker, and Adebayo could be less than 100% against a Hawks team that’s been averaging 114.9 ppg with Young in the lineup this season.

Recall that Atlanta has averaged 118, 110 and 109 points in the last three meetings between these teams during the regular season. Not amazing, but all higher than his team total of 105.5 tonight.

Choose: Hawks team over 105.5 overall (-115 on FanDuel)
