HBO Max adds a shuffle button to play random episodes

Fancy watching South Park or Friends – but just want to catch a random episode? HBO Max is here for you now.

WarnerMedia’s HBO Max this week introduced a new “Shuffle” button, a highly requested feature that gives users the ability to play a random episode of a curated selection of series on the platform.

The move comes almost a year after Netflix officially launched Play Something, a shuffle option that pulls a TV show or movie based on subscribers’ viewing history or from their watchlist.

HBO Max’s version of the shuffle button, on the other hand, doesn’t include everything in the service. Rather, it’s limited to 45 shows (for now), including Friends, Curb Your Enthusiasm, The Big Bang Theory, Looney Tunes, Rick & Morty, Teen Titans Go!, and South Park .” The company says the HBO Max Shuffle is designed to randomize episodes within a given series because that “gives[s] users some context in the content they are shown.”

“With an added element of serendipity, selecting the shuffle button lets you put your feet up and start watching faster,” said a WarnerMedia spokesperson.

Another difference between Netflix and HBO Max Shuffle Play features: The HBO Max iteration is currently available worldwide in the desktop (web browser) interface, while Netflix’s Play Something is available on connected TVs and Android phones and tablets is.
