That’s why HBO Max long ago announced the development of an unprecedented series, a prequel to It, based on the Stephen King story.
As part of the franchise created with the two hit Warner Bros. films, the streaming platform is now focusing on the origins of these very special characters.
As you may recall, Tim Curry’s performance as Pennywise in 1990 was exceptional.
In recent years, however, the classic clown tale has been re-adapted for the screen by Andy Muschietti.
In 2017, Argentine director released It: Part One and revived the phenomenon in 2019 with It: Part Two.
However, neither the novel nor its film adaptations sufficiently developed the construction of the main character, so now they will solve it thanks to a prequel series.
So the fiction will be called Welcome to Derry, which refers to the fictional town in Maine, USA, where some of King’s novels and stories are set.
The author has done nothing more than give his approval to the project, which is already underway, and that means that although its producers broke the news in March of this year, it was only confirmed today that HBO Max gave the green light for the series.
Shadow and Bone executive producer and screenwriter Shelley Meals announced the launch of the project on the famous social network Twitter.
First day at the Welcome to Derry Writers Room! We’re floating down here.”
This is how the participation in the series begins, in which Andy Muschietti will this time take on the role of Executive Producer, accompanied by his sister Bárbara Muschietti and Jason Fuchs.
In doing so, they will attempt to repeat the team that raked in over $1,100 million in collections at the box office.
It is important to mention that some time ago Bárbara Huhnetti assured on Instagram:
We’ve been dreaming of this for a long time. Thank you Master King for the novel that changed us as children and thank you for being the best traveling companion.”
And while all indications are that the same members of 2017’s hit will be repeated, the truth is that it’s still unknown whether Bill Skarsgård will be part of the HBO Max series or a younger version of Pennywise will be chosen.
