“He ate the money!”: A couple manages to get back the $4,000 their dog swallowed

A Pittsburgh couple's dog with luxurious tastes, Cecil, devoured the most expensive meal of his life, eating more than 4,000 pounds $ in small denominations that he found in his master's kitchen last December. They were able to reconstruct part of the loot, with a little patience…

On December 8, Clayton and Carrie Law couldn't believe that their dog Cecil had eaten the $4,000 cash they had just picked up from the bank sealed in an envelope.

As soon as the money was on the kitchen counter, he made short work of it.

Since Cecil was a gentle Goldendoodle dog at the age of 7, he had never done the slightest thing stupid until that moment. His masters were shocked and surprised to say the least.

It was Clayton who discovered small pieces of nibbled banknotes scattered on the floor. “I shouted to Carrie, 'He ate the money, he ate $4,000!' he tells USA Today in an interview.

“I thought I was going to have a heart attack,” added Carrie, his partner. “It’s so out of character. He doesn't eat food on a coffee table [habituellement].”

According to his handlers, Cecil took about half of the money and tore up the other half.

After searching for solutions online, the couple called the bank to ask if they could deposit the damaged money. Their financial institution unexpectedly told them that this was a common occurrence and advised them to wait for the money to be withdrawn.

The little wolverine was fine: the vet confirmed that he will be fine once the bills are paid. It remains to be seen what can be saved for the bank.

“We were pretty depressed about the situation,” Clayton Law told USA Today. “At around 2am Cecil woke us up because he was vomiting. When I saw the tickets, I felt hopeful again.”

Over the next three days, Cecil issued $50 and $100 denominations. Then the dog's two owners began to sort through the valuable pieces of paper through the vomit and feces.

According to USA Today, Clayton Law was tracking down defectors and cleaning the sink. Meanwhile, Carrie tried to put the money together and match the serial numbers.

The banknotes were then carefully sorted, washed and returned to the bank. “I never thought I would launder money,” Carrie says, laughing. “There’s a first for everything.”

Clayton and Carrie Law managed to recover around $3,550 out of the $4,000 they lost.

A video that went viral

The $4,000 bills were originally intended to pay workers to install a fence for their homes. Naturally, the couple was angry at their pet Cecil. “At first. But now we laugh about the situation,” Clayton told USA Today.

“When my wife posted the video on Instagram, we couldn’t believe the response we received,” he says. “It's crazy,” Carrie agreed, echoing the same sentiment.

Since its release on December 14, the video has been viewed nearly 12 million times on Instagram.
