“It wasn’t easy, both for me and for her. She’s not just the victim. Let’s hope that one day we’ll be able to forgive one another,” the 34-year-old defendant said two weeks ago at the Salaberry-de-Valleyfield courthouse. The man, whose identity we will keep secret to protect the identity of his children, pleaded guilty to charges of aggravated assault and assault on his wife and two young children.
Judge Joey Dubois dismissed the defendant and accused him of not having recognized the seriousness of his crime.
“You’re the one who inflicted those stab wounds, no one else,” he said firmly. Madame is not responsible for that and you have to understand that one day.
knife under his covers
The facts happened on January 15 at the family home. The accused, who had been sleeping in a separate bedroom in the basement for some time, had hidden a knife under the covers. That evening his wife spotted him as they were discussing their day. At this point, tension increased and an altercation ensued between the two. The man then grabbed her by the neck so much that she could neither breathe nor speak. When she tried to defend herself, she injured her hand with the knife.
The duo then moved to the ground floor, where the situation came to a head. The defendant stabbed his wife multiple times, mainly in the neck but also in the chest, neck, arm and face. According to the summary of facts read by the prosecutor, no fewer than 12 broken knives and an impressive amount of blood were found around the victim.
In front of the children
The climax of the horror is that this horrifying scene unfolded before the eyes of the couple’s children, who were awakened by their mother’s screams.
They begged their father to let them go, and two of them even tried to intervene in their defense. They, too, suffered lacerations trying to stop their father’s insanity.
“I almost died but I’m still here,” the mother said in her heartbreaking testimony in court. The scars on my body, I see them. They remind me of the aggressiveness of a man I’ve lived with for 16 years of my life. I will stay strong to take care of my children. [Ils] are all I have right now. I will stay here and nothing can stop me, not even 15 knife wounds.
The defendant cited mental health issues during the trial and even attempted to prove that he was not criminally responsible. However, a forensic report showed that this was not the case.
Judge Dubois supported the parties’ joint proposal and sentenced the father to eight and a half years in prison.
