An 82-year-old man died in South Korea after eating the typical Korean dish “san-nakji,” which is a live octopus cut into small pieces and seasoned with sesame oil. According to CNN, the mollusk became lodged in the elderly man’s throat and ultimately caused his death. The incident occurred around 11:30 a.m. in Gwangju, a city near the southern tip of South Korea. Rescuers who arrived on scene after an emergency call performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation before transporting him to hospital, where he died shortly afterwards. Authorities said the elderly man’s airway was blocked by one of the tentacles while he was eating the “live octopus,” which then led to cardiac arrest, local media quoted authorities as saying. Data from the Seoul Fire Department, cited by The Korea Herald, estimated that three deaths were caused by the “still moving” bowl between 2013 and 2019. When they arrive at the table, the Nakji – little octopuses – are actually still able to wriggle around. For this reason, the dish is at the top of many lists collecting the world’s most dangerous foods, including the pufferfish and the bullfrog.
