He Hunted Bigfoot: Former Boxing Champion Named to Russian Army

Partial mobilization in Russia also affects many athletes. Including Nikolai Walujew, a former boxing world champion.

Valuyev has made a name for himself as the tallest and heaviest boxing champion in the world. Between 2005 and 2009, the 2.13 meter giant regains the WBA championship belt. The former professional boxer, who has won 50 of his 53 fights, has been a member of the Duma, Russia’s parliament, for Vladimir Putin’s United Russia party since 2011. During the Russian partial mobilization, the 49-year-old was also summoned to the military service.

“Of course I will”

Valuyev has now confirmed that he has received his call-up notice. In it, the former professional boxer was asked to present himself to the registry and military enlistment office. “Am I going? Of course I’m going to the office now,” Putin’s now party friend told Izvestia. Valuyev wants to get in touch next week.

More recently, the 2.13-meter giant caused an uproar with an unusual expedition. After ending his professional career in 2009, Valuyev tried to prove the existence of a “Russian Bigfoot”, which is why he appeared in a British TV series about yetis. After a search expedition for the former boxer, a public statement said: “Valuev could not find Yeti, but he discovered ‘trails’ like broken branches. When they arrived at a cave, they saw huge footprints.” Even before his professional boxing career, Valuyev had an unusual job as a debt collector.

Anyway, Valuyev is not the only athlete who received a draft order, and former Russian team player Diniyar Bilyaletdinov was also drafted for the fight against Ukraine.
