The rapist, an 18-year-old young man, is said to have sprayed the 15-year-old with kerosene and then put out the flames. The girl managed to survive, but is in a very serious condition in the hospital. The victim’s 18-year-old cousin had molested her three months earlier, then the child was discovered to be pregnant. After learning of the girl’s pregnancy, the two families discussed the need to arrange a marriage. However, the 18-year-old did not want to marry her, so he lured her into the house with the pretext of talking about the marriage and, with the help of his mother, tried to set her on fire. The young man has now been arrested as a victim continues to struggle between life and death.
This is another case of abuse in India, where rape victims often do not report it out of fear or shame, and are just as often forced to marry their rapist. Victims of abuse are also increasingly being killed, either during the violence itself or afterwards.
