The former US president is being considered for the post as the split in the Republican Party led to Kevin McCarthy being removed from office
Former US President Donald Trump said on Thursday (October 5, 2023) that he would accept being president of the Chamber of Deputies for a “short period of time” until the Republican Party elects a replacement. The position has been vacant since Tuesday (October 3) after thenPresident of the House of Representatives Republican Kevin McCarthy was ousted.
“They asked me if I would attend the party for a short period of time until they made a decision. I don’t do this because I want to. “I will do it if necessary if they can’t make a decision,” Trump said in an interview with Fox News. If he takes office, according to the former president, it will only be for “30, 60 or 90 days.”
On Wednesday (October 4), Trump told reporters that “a lot of people” had questioned whether he would take over the chamber. The politician had already declared that he would do “what is best for the country, for the Republican Party and for the people.” However, he stated that his focus is on the presidential race.
McCarthy’s resignation from the House presidency was pushed by conservative Republicans unhappy with his management of government spending and negotiations with President Joe Biden.
It was his fellow Republican Matt Gaetz who filed the lawsuit against McCarthy on Monday (October 2), a day after the US Congress passed a bill that temporarily finances the work of the country’s government and prevents a “shutdown”.
Since the Chamber President left the Chamber, the work of the Chamber has been interrupted and will only be resumed after a new name has been chosen.
House Republican Majority Leader Steve Scalise and Rep. Jim Jordan of Ohio filed their candidacies for office on Wednesday (October 4).
