“Over the past 69 years, generations of officials, doctors and health workers have struggled to overcome many difficulties to carry out with all their hearts and strength the noble mission of curing diseases and saving people,” said the country's president, Vo Van Thuong.

Physicians are the central and decisive force in caring for, protecting and improving the health of the people, the dignitary emphasized and appreciated the achievements of the sector, which also contribute to national development and advance in the implementation of the Millennium Development Goals of Sustainable Development by 2030 .

In an event the day before to mark the anniversary, the President emphasized that the Communist Party and the Vietnamese state always place people at the center of the development process and that protecting, caring for and improving their health is therefore an important task and priority in the development policy of the country country.

Many achievements in specialized branches have become the pride of Vietnamese medicine and recognized on the world medical map, which has opened up good prospects on the way to overcoming challenges and limitations in the treatment of rare and dangerous diseases, Van Thuong emphasized, according to the VNA message.

With this in mind, highlighted here today are Vietnam's advances in laparoscopic surgery and organ transplantation, the latter a practice that began in 1992 at Military Hospital 103, where a 40-year-old patient with end-stage renal failure was operated on.

Just five decades later, in 2017, the nation's first lung and heart transplant was successfully performed on a pediatric patient, and the following year, lung and kidney implantations were performed from brain-dead donors.

In 2020, Vietnamese doctors became the first in Southeast Asia to perform a limb implantation and an intestinal transplant from a living donor, and last year they successfully performed a multi-organ heart and kidney transplant.

Other areas in which there has been undeniable progress over the last six decades have been the development of the national vaccination system, which, among other things, enabled the eradication of polio in 2000, and the production and export of vaccines.
