Health Canada Recalls Nasal Spray Due to Risk of Bacterial Contamination

Two lots of APO Mometasone Nasal Spray, 50 mcg/spray in a measured dose, prescribed for allergies or sinusitis, are recalled by Health Canada, which warns against their use due to possible bacterial contamination.

The affected lots are named TX5343 and TZ2586 and will expire in September or October 2025, Health Canada said Monday.

If you have any of these products, the Department asks that you do not use the product and return it to a local pharmacy for safe disposal.

A bacteria involved

This recall concerns possible contamination by the bacterium Burkholderia cepacia (CBC). This is a group of bacteria that is relatively harmless to healthy people, but dangerous to people with health problems or pregnant women.

“In more severe cases, BCC can cause blood infections that can lead to sepsis (a serious medical condition caused by an excessive immune response to an infection) and death,” Health Canada stressed.

People who experience fever, pain or pressure in the face after using Apotex spray should consult a doctor.

According to Health Canada, the supply of this medication may be temporarily limited due to this recall.
