Hertz decided to add the Tesla Model Y to its growing electric vehicle after announcing a contract to buy 100,000 Model 3 vehicles last year.
Last year, Hertz announced key efforts to electrify its rental car fleet, with a focus on bulk purchases of 100,000 Tesla Model 3 vehicles.
The news pushed Tesla’s share price to record highs, despite confusion over the deal. Tesla did not offer any transactions to Hertz, so rental companies need to order electric cars like any other customer.
The biggest problem is the timeline. Hertz said it plans to deliver 100,000 Model 3s by the end of 2022. Tesla wasn’t sure if that would be possible, but Hertz has already made a lot of deliveries and automakers are still ordering the new Model 3 by the end of the year.
Car rental companies are now adding Model Y vehicles to their electric vehicle fleet.
Hertz previously posted only Model 3 on its website, but this week we’ve added a Model Y electric SUV.
The company previously specifically mentioned the Model 3 only as part of its 100,000 order.
It’s not clear if Model Y will be part of the goal of adding 100,000 EVs or will be added to the Model 3 order. The latter makes more sense, based on last year’s Hertz newsletter.

In addition to adding Tesla cars to rental cars, Hearts has signed a contract with Uber to provide drivers with access to Tesla cars. If 50,000 Tesla cars are offered to Uber drivers and the program is successful, the company will have more options.
Hearts is also promoting the growing Tesla vehicle through a new advertising campaign featuring Tom Brady.
