Heartstopper has confirmed the highly-anticipated second series is in production and teased that four new cast members have joined the show.

The popular LGBTQI+ coming-of-age drama, based on the graphic novels by Alice Oseman, confirmed the cast had reunited for a tabletop reading following the release of the first series in April.

The Heartstopper and Netflix social media accounts took to Instagram on Thursday to announce the show was back in production with a sweet video.

The clip begins with leads Kit Connor (Nick Nelson) and Joe Locke (Charlie Spring) holding the Season 2 script in their hands before looking at the camera and saying, “Oh hi.”

It then flashes to other cast members – including William Gao (Tao Xu), Yasmin Finney (Elle Argent) and Tobie Donovan (Isaac Henderson) – who wave and greet the camera.

The group is then joined by Rhea Norwood (Imogen Heaney), Corinna Brown (Tara Jones) and Kizzy Edgell (Darcy Olsson), all sharing a group hug.

Other cast members then greet the camera with “Hi,” mimicking the sweet on-screen interactions between main characters Charlie and Nick at the beginning of their budding romance.

The cast – including Sebastian Croft (Ben Hope) and Jenny Walster (Tori Spring) – then take part in a table reading, where Joe and Rhea both look animated as they recite their lines.

The overjoyed group claps as it appears the first reading of the highly-anticipated second series is a success.

The video also teased a number of new cast members, as four new faces appeared on screen and greeted the camera during montage.

The video’s ending teased the plot for the second series, with Kit saying “Bonjour,” alluding to the school trip to the French capital that takes place in Alice’s third book.

The cast for the second season will be joined by Leila Khan as student Sahar Zahid, Jack Barton as Nick’s older brother David, Bradley Riches as student James McEwan, and Nima Taleghani as teacher Mr. Farouk, according to Deadline.

All of the main cast from the first series also return, including appearances from Olivia Coleman and Stephen Fry, who appeared in voiceover as the headmaster of Truham Grammar.

The second series is set to follow the plot of Alice Oseman’s Heartstopper Volume 3, after the first season was based on her first two graphic novels.

In the comics, the Truham Grammar and Higgs students fly to Paris on a school trip that will lead to new friendships and mental health issues coming to light.

The eight-part show has already been renewed for two more seasons, and the upcoming second season is expected to focus heavily on Charlie’s eating disorder.

In the first series, schoolboy Charlie fell in love with his classmate Nick, forcing her on a journey of self-discovery and acceptance.

There are currently four books in the series, with a fifth set due out in February 2023. Alice is also releasing the Heartstopper Yearbook in October.

Alice, 27, began writing her debut novel Solitaire in the summer of 12th grade at school and sent the manuscripts to agents after high school.

The book about Charlie’s sister Tori Spring was purchased and she wrote a follow-up book, Radio Silence, before returning to supporting characters Nick and Charlie and creating the spin-off Heartstopper.

She crowdfunded £58,000 for a self-published edition and mailed the first 2,000 books to buyers herself – with the story now becoming a global phenomenon.

In 2019, she sold the rights to See Saw movies, bringing the project to Netflix. Alice adapted the books and is very involved in the process – she even has a cameo in the first series.

Figures published by Nielsen show that total UK print book sales for Alice’s titles totaled £5.5million from January to June.

That puts her ahead of David Walliams (£4.7m), JK Rowling (£3.8m), James Patterson (£2.9m), Lee Child (£2.1m) and Sally Rooney (1.3m). million pounds).
