First 34 degrees, then hail storms in Austria

Warm air masses arrive in the country with a westerly current: “The second heat wave of the year reaches its peak at the beginning of the week”, says Manfred Spatzierer, chief meteorologist at the center of the storm. “On Monday, temperatures of up to 36 degrees are expected, especially in eastern Austria.” It will remain very hot across the country on Tuesday, with the highest temperatures of around 36 degrees being hit in the west in particular.

Temperatures above 35 degrees already occur almost every year in most capital cities. In the evening, local, but quite strong thunderstorms, with sometimes stormy gusts, will also pass in the south and east. The greatest likelihood of this is in the far north and from Carinthia to Southwest Styria. Temperatures reach from west to east 29 to 36 degrees.

On Tuesday the sun will shine often again, in the afternoon there will be only isolated thunderstorms of heat in the Alps. In the afternoon and during the night, heavy thunderstorms will rise from Vorarlberg to Upper Austria. Before that, temperatures rose to 30 to 36 degrees with the highest values ​​from Vorarlberg to Salzburg.

Increased risk of storms

In preparation for a cold front, some clouds and some thunderstorms will move across the mountains and on the north side of the Alps from early Wednesday. In the south and east, on the other hand, the sun appears frequently, but at the latest in the evening there will also be thunderstorms here, with considerable risk of thunderstorms. “A classic storm situation is emerging, especially in the south, where storms can lead to large hail, gusty winds and heavy rain,” says Nikolas Zimmermann, storm specialist at the storm center. In the west it is already cooling down significantly, but in the southeast it will be hot again: the maximum values ​​are between 23 and 35 degrees from west to east.

Arelaxing on thursday

Thursday usually shows its cloudy side, the sun is most likely to be seen early in the south and throughout the day in the far west and north in the middle. In addition, it rains repeatedly as showers, especially in the south with interspersed and productive thunderstorms. From Lake Constance to Upper Austria, on the other hand, it dries up more and more. However, the clouds are very hesitantly dissipating. With a maximum of 18-27 degrees, it also noticeably cools down in the southeastern half.

On Friday, the weather should calm down and temperatures will rise again. The coming weekend will likely be increasingly hot again with lots of sunshine and highs above 30 degrees.
