With several major Hollywood acts releasing just days before Christmas, theater owners in the province are expecting a busy holiday season at movie theaters.
“Even if we don't have a locomotive like Avatar 2 last year, this year we are lucky to have several good films for all tastes,” says Éric Bouchard, co-president of the Association of Quebec Cinema Owners.
“We have a children's film with migration, a family film with Wonka, a Quebec film with Sapin$. Many theaters will continue to show Ru, which has just broken the million dollar mark at the box office and is doing well in theaters.
Historically, the Christmas holidays have always been one of the busiest times for cinemas in the province. Thanks to the phenomenal success of the blockbuster “Avatar 2,” theater operators had the best Christmas season in a long time last year.
“Last year, Avatar alone accounted for between 70 and 75% of Christmas revenue,” recalls Éric Bouchard. I don't think there will be a film this year that will stand out significantly from the others. But I think that instead of having a few full halls and a few half-full halls, we will have all of our halls well attended.”
