Helen Skelton hits back at “cheeky” Jon Kay after he commented on Morning Live's later start time following the BBC schedule switch

Helen Skelton has clapped back at Jon Kay after he made a “cheeky” dig at the BBC's programming changes.

Jon, 54, joked he would “hold the fort” after BBC Breakfast was extended by 15 minutes, meaning a later start time for Morning Live.

Morning Live presenters Helen, 40, and Gethin Jones, 45, appeared via videolink to talk about the upcoming show – and Jon couldn't resist teasing them about having more time to themselves.

Jon, presenting with Sarah Campbell, said: “I know your program is running longer too, you've been extended, but does that mean you can sleep in a bit?”

Gethin replied, “No.” You know what? I thought so, but they made us come early just to make sure we were ready today because we still have a lot to cover, but thanks for bringing that up too, Jon.”

Jon said, “We'll just hold down the fort until 9:30 until you get your hair done and ready, that's fine.”

Helen wouldn't put up with any nonsense and clapped back: “We're ready, what do you want?” “You cheeky monkey,” before all the presenters laughed.

Jon revealed the schedule change on X, formerly known as Twitter.

He wrote: “It's a big week for the #BBCBreakfast team.” From now on, the program will be 15 minutes longer Mon-Fri.

“Then at 9.30am our friends and neighbors @BBCMorningLive take over – and their show has been extended too! The UK's two biggest morning shows have just got BIGGER!'

The changes mean that instead of ending at 9:15am, BBC Breakfast will now end at 6:00am and will now run until 9:30am.

But “Morning Live” has gotten an even bigger expansion, now as an hour-and-a-half program instead of 45 minutes.

Immediately following the new schedule changes, Morning Live – hosted by Helen Skelton, Gethin Jones and Michelle Ackerley – will be followed by three shows before News At One.

At the moment these are Rip Off Britain, Homes Under The Hammer and Bargain Hunt.

However, between the same two main weekday programs before the holiday period, BBC One showed For Love Or Money, Frontline Fightback, Homes Under The Hammer and Bargain Hunt.

Another impact of the changes to BBC One's programming is that the channel is now less in line with its main rival ITV.

Before the change, BBC Breakfast and Morning Live occupied exactly the same time slot as Good Morning Britain and Lorraine for their competitor, while Morning Live now runs 45 minutes after This Morning.
