“I've dreamed of becoming a driver since I was five years old when I boarded a truck with my grandfather between Italy and France,” he reveals Newspaper Corentin Obert, who has one of the most in-demand jobs of the year in Quebec according to Indeed.

Salesforce developer, nurse, truck driver… yesterday the job search site Indeed published its list of the 10 most attractive and highest-paying jobs of 2024 (see table below).

In addition to the usual tech positions such as developers, IT managers and SAP consultants, which remain in high demand, this 2024 ranking also includes jobs from other industries that take into account average salaries and job growth over the last three years.

“We often see concentration in a particular sector, but this time there is concentration in multiple areas. It’s pretty diverse,” noted Stepan Arman, senior sales manager for Indeed in Quebec, in an interview with the Journal.

“It shows the extent of the needs across Quebec,” he said. Caregivers are in high demand here, adds Mr. Arman.

Truckers asked

For Corentin Obert, truck driving is the dream job, despite the roads in Quebec, which are not all pretty. He wouldn't trade his job at Transport Matte in Portneuf County for another for the world.

“It started when I was a child. Later, as soon as I had some free time, I got into a truck,” says the man who left Europe for Quebec with his wife three and a half years ago.

Marc Cadieux, CEO of the Quebec Trucking Association (ACQ), reminds in the Journal that the shortage in the industry is still ongoing. “We are looking for 5,600 drivers and 3,000 mechanics,” he states.

Truck driver Aurélie Becker has also experienced professional love at first sight in Saint-Augustin-de-Desmaures, at G&H Logistics, since she started driving her truck a year and a half ago. “I love it,” she says over the phone.

“I studied animal science. I redirected myself after that. I attended training from passionate teachers. It gave us confidence,” she recalls.

$80,000 worth of community organizers?

In the top 10 jobs of the year, it may be surprising that the community organizer position was paid $80,000, but keep in mind that this “reflects salary estimates submitted by users and from past and current job postings on Indeed were collected”.

We note that the salary scale of health care facilities is regulated by collective agreements with hourly rates ranging from $27.08 to $47.98 per hour, according to the Negotiating Committee of Employers in the Health and Social Services Sector of Quebec.

“Actual compensation for this and all other positions on this list may vary depending on factors such as the hiring organization, location, length of employment and experience level,” Indeed says.

Engineers wanted

Among the sought-after jobs in Quebec, engineers are also at the top of the list.

Last November, a study by the Order of Engineers of Quebec (OIQ), obtained by Le Journal, found that more than 52,000 engineering professionals will be needed over the next decade.

“The balance will be fragile in IT, aerospace and electronics sectors. There could be a deficit. We have to do more,” said its president Sophie Larivière-Mantha.

Last month, the chief economist of the National Bank (BN) also expressed concern about “the poor performance of metropolitan Quebec.”

“Full-time employment growth in Quebec has been disappointing. We are talking about 16,000 jobs out of 60,000 jobs in the last 12 months, so only 25% full-time jobs, compared to 84% in the rest of Canada,” he stressed.
