Liam and Olivia are the most common boy and girl names in the United States in 2022 – for the third year in a row, both names are at the top.
Although the most common names have remained the same, Dutton has been the name with the fastest growing popularity. It is the surname of the fictional Dutton family in the popular western TV series Yellowstone.
Given the show’s popularity, it now appears to be a growing it-name for a newborn.
The Social Security Administration recently published the annual list of popular baby names. The agency tracks baby names in each state based on Social Security card applications.
Liam has been the most popular name for boys since 2017, while Olivia ousted Emma four years ago in 2019. Emma is now in second place.
Luna was the only new name to appear in the top 10, replacing Harper.

The agency has been compiling the list since 1997.
“The list shows the influence of pop culture on naming trends,” the Social Security Administration said.
Yellowstone may have had the greatest impact on new parents. The neo-western starring Kevin Costner premiered in 2018. Kayce and Rip, other characters in the series, also saw huge increases in popularity.
Costner, who plays John Dutton, owner of the Yellowstone ranch, on the TV show. It was recently reported that Costner is not returning for season five after appearing on the show.

Dutton moved up to 835 on the Social Security list, a change of 986 spots from 2021. It is the surname of the fictional family featured in the series, and their ranks include John Dutton from Costner.
Kayce, like Kayce John Dutton on the show, moved up to the 587th place in the list of most popular names, up from 1,077 the year before. Luke Grimes plays Kayce.

Rip, also from Yellowstone, also garnered attention by name but didn’t make the Social Security top 1,000. Cole Hauser’s Rip Wheeler is John Dutton’s son-in-law.
The third most common girl name is Charlotte, followed by Amelia, Sophia, Isabella, Ava, Mia, Evelyn, and Luna. For boys names, Liam is followed by Noah, Oliver, James, Elijah, William, Henry, Lucas, Benjamin and Theodore.
Other names growing in popularity among boys: Chosen, Khaza, Eithan. For girls, Wrenlee is followed by Neriah, Arlet, Georgina and Amiri.
The latest data from the Social Security Administration shows that 3.64 million babies in the US were issued Social Security cards last year, a slight increase from 2021.
The SSA’s website also allows users to explore how common names are in specific states. For example, William and Olivia were the most popular names in 2021, while Oliver and Evelyn were the most common in Oregon.
