If you live with a cat, you don’t have to watch her for long to understand how intelligent she is and how good she is at enjoying life. But if you too thought after reading the ranking of the world’s smartest dogs that it wouldn’t stand up to comparison to your own cat, here you are treated to a similar research into the cat world.
Although cats have relatively small brains, numerous scientific studies have shown that cats are highly emotionally intelligent and adaptable, making them the smartest creatures in the animal kingdom. Although there is no standardized test to measure intelligence in cats, researchers have studied their adaptability, curiosity and need for mental stimulation. As we know, cats can also be trained to respond to commands, they not only understand when we call them but also when we talk about them, they know what time it is, they understand our emotions and express theirs facing us with bodies made of movements.
So what are the smartest breeds? Based on all these factors, the Abyssinians are the most talented, closely followed by the Bengal, Burmese, Cornish Rex, Scottish Fold, Singaporean, Siamese, Angora and Bobtail.
“Each species evolved to adapt to a different niche. A mental ability useful to one species may not be beneficial to the survival of another,” explains Samantha Watson, Rspca’s scientific director, underscoring how “scientifically, there is no universal measure of ‘intelligence’ in animals. Some evidence suggests that certain breeds tend to be more active or friendly with people. However, each cat is a unique individual and there are significant differences within these breeds.”
In short, “Every cat has a different personality, shaped by both their genetics and their life history.” And it’s for them that they are so fascinating. And you, what do you think?
