Given the brutality of this telephone conversation, which has undoubtedly been heard dozens of times since the Hamas attack, Ilan burst into tears as her daughter declared: “Dad, I love you. We’re sitting in the car and we can’t leave.” Shortly afterwards, the conversation ends after one Maya’s last heartbreaking scream abruptly leaves the father helpless and, above all, heartbroken despite the support of his wife Mirit.
The two children are still alive
The media coverage of this call is a conscious and voluntary gesture by the family, which believes it is necessary for “the world to hear and know” what happened to Maya, Itay and hundreds of other people held captive by Hamas at this festival . “I thought she was dead, I thought they were both dead,” the father admits.
If Ilan Regev phrases this sentence this way, it is because he has now informed the Israeli army that his two children are still alive. The CNN journalist claims the two parents were exposed on social media to a Hamas video in which they say they briefly saw their son alive but were holding him hostage. Another reason for hope that pushes them to release this recording.
According to recent reports, on October 7, more than 1,400 people were killed in Israeli territory by Hamas men, most of whom were civilians. But almost a quarter of the victims would be participants in this festival, not counting the 200 hostages, according to an estimate by the newspaper Le Monde.
