Lebanon’s armed group Hezbollah and Israel exchanged fire on Sunday – a day after Palestinian militants launched a deadly surprise attack in Israel – leaving hundreds dead and thousands injured.

Hezbollah said on Sunday it fired guided missiles and artillery at Shebaa Farms to show it stood “in solidarity” with the Palestinian people, Portal reported. Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said On Sunday it said the IDF had “attacked targets in the area” after Hezbollah, an Iran-backed group, fired rockets into Israel.

The IDF also said that one of its drones hit Hezbollah’s infrastructure in the Mount Dov area, its post said

“The IDF has taken preparatory measures for this type of eventuality. We will continue to operate in all regions and at any time necessary to ensure the safety of Israeli civilians,” the IDF said.

There were no immediate reports of casualties, according to Portal.

In a surprise move, the Palestinian militant group Hamas launched a multi-pronged attack on Israel on Saturday with a barrage of rocket attacks and invaded Israel, holding citizens and military personnel hostage, prompting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to declare war on the group. Israeli retaliation has so far left at least 250 Israelis dead and more than 300 Palestinians killed.

Later that day, the prime minister vowed to destroy Hamas and avenge the dead and injured.

“What happened today is unprecedented in Israel and I will ensure that it does not happen again,” Netanyahu said in a televised address in Hebrew. “The entire government is behind this decision. The IDF will immediately use its full force to destroy Hamas’ capabilities.”
