Hezbollah condemns US interference in the presidential election

Beirut, Dec 4 (Prensa Latina) The Lebanese Islamic Resistance (Hezbollah) today condemned US interference in the process of electing a new president for the republic, after more than a month of constitutional vacuum.

Through statements by several of its leaders, the Shia force insisted on the need for political consensus and accused the US government of working to create chaos in the country and provoke internal conflict.

Hezbollah Deputy Secretary-General Naim Qassem said the priority today is to elect the next head of state capable of backing a plan to bail out the national economy without serving Israel or the United States.

Sheikh Qassim Al-Ahad demanded a minimum of understanding by insisting that MPs and parliamentary blocs should agree among themselves to name the Lebanese president, local broadcaster Al Manar reported.

In this sense, Sheikh Qassem pointed out that the United States is the basis for the destruction of Lebanon through sanctions and constant interference in internal affairs, in addition to preventing aid from nations like Russia, China and Iran and imposing policies and positions in service of the American and Tel Aviv projects.

For his part, Ibrahim al-Moussawi, a member of the Baalbek-Hermel bloc, said that no party in parliament has enough votes to elect a president and called for moving towards dialogue and consensus to put the nation ahead of the current save mess.

No candidate received a majority of 65 votes in eight terms, and the power vacuum is expected to last into early next year, analysts have warned.

The political crisis, parliamentary fragmentation and an interim government complicate the appointment of the Lebanese Republic’s president amid the deteriorating living conditions of its citizens.
