A zookeeper was attacked by a hippopotamus at a zoo in Changsha, Hunan province, China, on September 24, which opened its mouth and caused the man to fall. See video above.

The man had entered a closed enclosure that serves as an animal shelter to break up a fight between two men. But one of them turned against the man, who left the place in a panic and was chased by the animal. Meanwhile, the public watched the scenes in fear.

As the pictures show, the hippopotamus opened its mouth wide, startling the zookeeper, who slipped and fell to the ground.

Surprisingly, as the international press pointed out, the zookeeper at Changsha Ecological Zoo escaped unharmed after the confrontation.

A spokesman for the zoo, which is investigating the incident, said staff were instructed not to enter animal enclosures.

“Zoo staff have been informed when it is safe to enter all animal enclosures. You should be particularly careful and avoid situations where males are in combat or when females are in heat.”

Attacks by hippos on humans are rare but can be fatal. Hippos are very territorial animals and will attack if they feel threatened. Although they are herbivores, they are large and their bites can be fatal.
