Mesmerizing images of the lighthouses on the shores of Lake Michigan in Barrien County emerged Tuesday as brutal weather brought record-breaking temperatures across much of the country, snow and freezing rain spread from the south to the northeast, and over 140 million people suffered from the cold Warnings.

New York City had its first significant snowfall in two years on Monday night and will be even colder on Tuesday, posing a threat to airlines and power grids, according to forecasts.

The most disruptions occurred at New York's LaGuardia Airport on Tuesday: 14 percent of flights were canceled and 57 percent were delayed. There were also significant disruptions at Bush International Airport in Houston and Reagan National Airport in Washington.

Portland General Electric warned that the threat of freezing rain on Tuesday could delay recovery efforts. Transportation officials urged residents to avoid driving as roads were expected to be dangerously slippery and covered in ice that could weigh down and topple trees and power lines.
