Historic record: The migrants who crossed the border last year equal the population of Houston

More than two million people have been arrested at the US-Mexico border in a year, authorities said on Monday. These numbers, which are equivalent to the population of Houston, Texas, set a new record for the first time annual statistics have reached this magnitude.

According to its August tally, the Customs and Border Protection Agency (CBP) detained 203,558 migrants who traveled from Mexico to the United States. With this result, the US authorities stopped 2 million 150,000 244 arrests in the government’s fiscal year 2022, which ends on September 30.

Houston, the most populous city in Texas, had a population of 2 million 288,000 250 as of July 1, 2021, according to data registered with the US Census Bureau.

The total, which includes some people arrested on more than one occasion, far exceeds last year’s record of 1.73 million arrests, the Washington Post reports.

A wave that grows. The historic figure, reported this year, includes large numbers of people crossing the border from outside of Mexico and Central America, two of the traditional sources of income for the United States.

  • In recent months, a large group of asylum seekers from Venezuela, Nicaragua and Cuba have been arrested while trying to cross remote areas near Yuma, Arizona and Del Rio, Texas.
  • Customs and Border Protection Commissioner Chris Magnus said in a statement that “failed communist regimes in Venezuela, Nicaragua and Cuba are driving the new wave of migration across the Western Hemisphere, including the recent surge in encounters at the southwestern border from the United States.” .

Lone Star. The controversial plan, implemented by Republican Gov. Greg Abbott (Texas) and Doug Ducey (Arizona), has worked to send more than 10,000 migrants on buses to Washington DC, New York and other northern destinations.

  • Last week, Republican Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis joined the measure after sending a plane carrying Venezuelan migrants to Martha’s Vineyard in Massachusetts.
  • That strategy, first implemented by Abbott in early 2022, is designed to put pressure on Democrats by overburdening the auxiliary services in their jurisdictions.
