Hocus Pocus 2 Easter Eggs: Original Movie References Explained

The following post contains spoilers for Hocus Pocus 2 is now streaming on Disney+.

They’re back, witches!

The highly anticipated Hocus Pocus 2 released on Disney+ on Friday, resurrecting the witchy Sanderson sisters (sorry: sis-taaahs!) for more Halloween mayhem.

The film is a nostalgic sequel to the 1993 cult classic, with the return of Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, Kathy Najimy and Doug Jones as Winifred, Sarah, Mary and Billy Butcherson, respectively. And while the sequel certainly has a few obvious nods to its predecessor – for example, the helpful black cat Cobweb is clearly Thackery Binx’s version in that film – we also noticed some other, smaller references to the original film that we’ve outlined in the list below.

Among the 13 tributes we spotted (a fitting number for this time of year, right?): Billy’s description of himself as a “good zombie,” the same term Max used for him at the end of the first film; a Salem resident who dressed up as Madonna for Halloween, mirroring Max’s mother’s costume at the town hall party; and a moment where we questioned everything we thought we knew about the hocus pocus universe.
