The BBC last year announced it was scrapping Holby City, a fictional town based on Bristol, as it continues its attempt to appear more northerly, prompting an angry backlash from fans.

The long-running medical drama has been filmed at the company’s London Elstree Studios for the past 23 years.

But the program ran counter to the BBC’s “Across the UK” plan to relocate TV shows and staff from London in a bid to eliminate the idea of a so-called “Southern bias”.

With three major soap operas set in the South – the others being Eastenders and Casualty – Holby City was seen as the easiest to drop, as Casualty’s Cardiff base helped meet the diversity policy.

The cost of producing Holby City will instead be used to fund two replacement soaps over the next three years; one is set in Northern England and another in either Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland.

The BBC said in a statement: “We are incredibly proud of Holby City. But it is with great sadness that we announce that after 23 years the show will end on screens in March next year.

“Sometimes we have to make difficult decisions to make room for new opportunities and as part of the BBC’s commitment to do more programming across the UK.

“We made the difficult decision to end the show to reshape the BBC’s drama roster to better reflect, represent and serve all parts of the country.

“We would like to take this opportunity to thank the amazing team at BBC Studios and all the cast and crew who have been involved with the show since 1999.

“Holby is an audience staple, captivating millions of viewers each week and winning hundreds of awards with a compelling blend of cutting-edge medical stories and explosive personal stories.”
