The pro-European MP Szymon Hołownia, leader of the centrist Christian Democratic party Poland 2050, has been elected president of the lower house of the Polish parliament in the first parliamentary session since the October elections. The Law and Justice party won some elections without achieving a majority. Hołownia defeated Law and Justice (PiS) candidate Elzbieta Witek by 265 votes to 193 in a chamber of 460 MPs. This is the first victory for the pro-European coalition, which demands the right to form a government.
“The Poles have told us very clearly with this enormous participation: Enough of what happened! Not only the party has to change, politics also has to change. The decline of politics began from the Sejm (lower house of Parliament), and reconstruction must begin from the Sejm,” said Szymon Hołownia, new President of the Lower House of the Polish Parliament.
The coalition led by Donald Tusk has a quorum. However, the president Andrzej Duda, elected with the support of Law and Justice, has appointed Mateusz Morawiecki, the last head of the executive branch, to form a government. Morawiecki told parliament he wanted to put an end to “political differences”.and asked for their support, but the parliamentary majority is looking for change.
