The 2023 home and away season starts with the lowest premiere ratings in recent history
The highly anticipated season premiere of “Home and Away” aired Monday night.
And while things got off to an explosive start with a tense car crash sequence, viewership was still somewhat disappointing.
The episode drew 519,000 viewers across the five capitals — which is certainly a decent number, but also the lowest Tube viewership yet for a season premiere.

The results were lower than last year’s premiere, which drew 537,000 Tube viewers.
The 2021 season attracted more than 600,000 tube viewers at its launch, while the 2020 opener only tuned in 548,000 in the major cities.
In contrast, 2019 was a better year for Home and Away with 620,000 viewers in major cities watching the premiere episode.

When Home and Away returned for the 2023 season, Felicity (Jacqui Purvis) and Eden (Stephanie Panozzo) were involved in a car accident with Justin (James Stewart) and Leah (Ada Nicodemou).
Meanwhile, Dr. Bree Cameron (Juliet Godwin) is kidnapped by her abusive husband Jacob (Alex Williams).
It comes after home and away veteran Ada shared some behind-the-scenes snaps of the car crash scene that aired Monday night.
The clip showed her filming her panicked reaction shots while sitting in the stationary vehicle.

When the director calls for action, Ada immediately waves her head and arms around before bursting out laughing later after taking the shot.
The Sydney-born actress also shared a gallery of photos showing her posing on set and giving a thumbs-up while wearing her gory makeup.
Many of her followers were amazed at how she could be so optimistic despite filming such tense and harrowing scenes.
