Homeless man murdered in Saint-Roch marina: “It could have been us,” say victims’ relatives

Friends of the homeless man who became the victim of Quebec’s first murder this year believe he was the victim of an unnecessary gesture, he who “wouldn’t have hurt a fly”.

“It’s special because it could have been any of us. It is certain that it is worrying,” launches Benoit Dussault, a client of the Lauberivière organization and close to the victim.

The body of a man in his 50s was found near the swimming pool at the Saint-Roch marina in Quebec on Saturday morning. After speaking of a suspicious death, authorities eventually concluded a homicide.

According to our information, the body of the well-known man from the Quebec homeless community, whose identity has not yet been confirmed by the medical examiner, was covered with signs of violence.

“He wasn’t a bad guy, on the contrary. He didn’t like injustice. He wouldn’t have harmed a fly,” said Marc Giguère, who has known the victim for more than eight years.

No place

According to her, the man went to Île d’Orléans in the summer, where he worked in the fields, before returning to Quebec in the winter. He was supposed to go there on April 15th, but due to the still cool temperatures he decided to postpone his trip.

On the night of the murder, the man in his fifties could not find a place to sleep in Lauberivière. He therefore went to the Saint-Roch marina to spend the night with a plastic tarpaulin before the tragedy happened.

“There’s a lot of violence in the streets, it’s the law of the jungle. I myself was attacked by two guys last month,” explains Richard Rioux, a homeless man met by Le Journal.

“You no longer have a choice to protect yourself,” he adds, showing the pocket knife he’s hiding in his pocket.
