Homemade sub found with 2 tons of cocaine and 2 dead

A homemade submarine with more than two tons of cocaine worth $87 million and two bodies was found off the coast of Colombia.

The handcrafted 15meterlong submarine was found afloat in the Pacific over the weekend, most likely en route to Central America, a key corridor for transporting cocaine north toward the United States (US). , reported the deputy.

Two other men were found next to the two bodies, who were still alive but had suffered the consequences of the crime toxic gases generated by fuel from the boat. It is not known whether the two people died from poisoning.

Video provided by the Colombian government showed an unconscious man being removed on a stretcher and taken to a parked ambulance. Authorities said both men, who were found alive, were transported to Tumaco on Colombia’s Pacific coast.

Footage showed the ship drifting low in the open sea and soldiers removing packets of cocaine from the flooded hull. It is possible that the artisanal submarine have stood in the water before they are discovered by the authorities.

The 2.6 tons of cocaine recovered from the submarine, much of it wrapped in black plastic, was offloaded onto a Colombian military ship.

Increasingly sophisticated drug submarines are a popular method used by Colombian drug traffickers to transport cocaine from their controlled areas to Central America and Mexico.

These submarines are built from boats or parts thereof, with builtin engines. Their underwater nature makes them difficult to detect by radar systems.

In 2022, Colombian Óscar Moreno Ricardo, who has spent the past two decades building drug trafficking submarines for Latin America’s drug cartels, was arrested in Colombia, ending a long career as an enabler of drug smuggling to the United States. However, This type of transport continues to increase.
