Madrid, 23 February (EFE).- The President of Honduras, Xiomara Castro, confirmed on Thursday that she would take part in the XXVIII. Ibero-American Summit to be held in the Dominican Republic next March.
Xiomara Castro is in Spain on an official visit, where she met with Andrés Allamand at the headquarters of the Iberoamerican General Secretariat (SEGIB), a meeting at which she confirmed her presence at the event.
Castro expressed his country’s willingness to start the procedures for Honduras to join the framework agreement for the promotion of the circulation of talent in the Ibero-American area, which according to SEGIB already includes ten Ibero-American countries.
In addition to carrying out the consultation process to join the Ibero-American Initiative to Prevent and Eliminate Violence Against Women, approved at the Andorra Summit in 2021.
For the Ibero-American Secretary-General, including Honduras in these two initiatives represents a clear commitment by the country to strengthen the Ibero-American community, according to a statement by SEGIB.
“On the one hand, as a space for mobility and knowledge transfer that creates opportunities for citizens, and on the other hand, as a region that works against gender-based violence, for equality and for the social, economic and political empowerment of women, the priorities promoted by President Castro,” said he.
On the occasion of the meeting, a cooperation agreement was signed between the Ibero-American Social Security Organization and the Honduran Ministry of Labor, which aims to deepen relations between the two.
Honduran Foreign Minister Enrique Reina stressed that the agreement will allow the Central American country to have “the best Ibero-American knowledge” in terms of social security, the statement said.
The Honduran President, leader of the left-wing Freedom and Refoundation Party, met with the President of the Spanish government, the socialist Pedro Sánchez, and with the King of Spain, Felipe VI, in Madrid on Wednesday.
This is his first trip to Spain after taking power just over a year ago and follows the visit Sánchez paid to Tegucigalpa last August. EFE
