A major fire devastated a skyscraper under construction in Hong Kong on the night of Thursday 2nd to Friday 3rd March. The fire, which broke out in the business and tourist district of Tsim Sha Tsui, was “largely extinguished” by 8:30 a.m. (local time) on Friday.
According to the fire department, two people were slightly injured and treated. For their part, the police told AFP that 170 residents had been relocated.
The fire broke out just after 11pm, with the flames first seen near scaffolding at the top of the building. The fire was visible from the harbor and sent ash into nearby streets where hundreds of people gathered.
Within an hour, the fire spread to the entire building under construction. A fire official said embers also started two other fires on the roofs of neighboring buildings, but these were quickly extinguished.
The 42-storey skyscraper under construction was to house a hotel. The project, valued at $764 million, started in 2019. It was originally scheduled to be completed in the first quarter of 2023, according to local media.
