Five children four brothers and a relative died on Saturday evening after a fire hit the house where they were staying in Arizona, US. They were left alone by their father, who was doing Christmas shopping.

Bullhead City police did not release the identities of the victims, according to the BBC, but did release the ages of the brothers, who were 2, 4, 5 and 13, while the visitor was 11. All were alone, without the presence of an adult, agents confirmed. The man's name was not released.

According to preliminary investigations cited by the British newspaper, the fire broke out on the ground floor and spread through the only staircase in the house, blocking the passage of children staying on the second floor and therefore any possibility of escape. The victims were found in the same room.

The victim's father told investigators that he “went out shopping for groceries and Christmas presents for approximately two and a half hours.”

The British newspaper also reported that neighbors tried to help put out the fire and that they were unaware there were people in the house at the time of the fire. If they had known, they would have called the fire department, they said.

The case remains under investigation.
