How Conference Championship Weekend Impacted the Seahawks' Coaching Search – Field Gulls

One of the side stories of Conference Championship weekend was how the results would affect the availability of two of the Seattle Seahawks' head coaching candidates.

The Baltimore Ravens lost at home to the Kansas City Chiefs, paving the way for defensive coordinator Mike Macdonald to be available for interviews starting this week. Seattle did not interview Macdonald during the Wild Card week window, which was narrowed somewhat by the Seahawks not parting ways with Pete Carroll until Wednesday. It was reported that the Seahawks intended to interview Macdonald after the season ended in Baltimore.

Meanwhile, the Detroit Lions blew a 24-7 halftime lead and lost 34-31 to the San Francisco 49ers. Offensive coordinator Ben Johnson's season is over. Unlike Macdonald, Seattle has already interviewed Ben Johnson. So if the Lions had won, there would have been a free week for a second Johnson interview. Because Macdonald never had an initial interview with the Seahawks, Seattle was unable to have an interview with him during Super Bowl week.

If the Seahawks want either of these two as their head coach, they have the opportunity. The Seahawks and Commanders are the only open HC positions, so Seattle has the option to hire at least one of them by default. Macdonald is the sharp defensive player while Johnson is the rising star on offense.

Starting this week, the search for trainers is likely to intensify.
