MAINTENANCE – In an in-depth interview, former journalist Chantal de Rudder tells the shared history of the veil and Iran, underlining the immense paradox of the French left, which, while fighting for women’s freedom, refuses to understand the true meaning of this garment .

Chantal de Rudder was editor-in-chief of Nouvel Obs. She is the author of an international study on the spread of the veil in the world: Un voile sur le monde (Éditions de l’Observatoire, 2021). She conducted her investigations in several countries, including Iran.

LE FIGARO. – What happened in Iran in the last few days? What is the significance of the veil in Iran?

Chantal DERUDER. –The veil seems to be the cornerstone of the mullahs’ regime. If people think it is a simple religious garment, they are mistaken. It was there that all the political reversals surrounding the hijab took place. Ironically, the chador has made Iranian women the engine of their country’s history!
