Government candidate Sergio Massa and right-wing libertarian Javier Milei are tied in the polls in Argentina. From neighboring Brazil, the president and his predecessor are increasingly interfering.

A few days after the first round, the electoral campaign in Argentina has already picked up speed again. Third-place finisher Patricia Bullrich made headlines on Wednesday when she announced her support for right-wing libertarian Javier Milei. Not everyone in his conservative opposition alliance agrees with this; a split now seems inevitable, which in turn could benefit left-wing gubernatorial candidate Sergio Massa. Milei and Massa will face each other in the second round on November 19th. Early research shows the two are practically neck and neck.

All of this is also being followed with great interest by neighboring Brazil. The political camps of Brazilian President Lula da Silva and his predecessor Jair Bolsonaro intervened in the Argentine electoral campaign. While Lula openly supports his “friend” Massa, Bolsonaro is on Milei’s side. Even before last Sunday’s election, he had guaranteed his support for Milei.
