The 2023 Pan American Games in Santiago began in style. After the exciting opening ceremony the day before, the first day of competition officially began this Saturday, October 21st (although some disciplines had already been held since Thursday) with good news for the Peruvian delegation. In the afternoon, confirmation came from Chile that figure skater Angelo Caro won the first silver medal for our country, after having previously won several bronze medals.
Winning this medal at the start of the event is a good sign for the red and white team, which consists of 216 athletes from 33 different sports. According to the President of the Peruvian Olympic Committee (COP) a few weeks ago, between 22 and 26 medals are expected to be won this year, which would be the second highest number for Peru in the history of the Pan American Games.

How many medals did Peru win at its best Pan American Games?
The best presentation of Peruvian sports at the Pan American Games took place at the previous edition, Lima 2019. Back then, the home team played a key role for our representatives, who together won a total of 41 medals. This number left them well short of the previous record of 14 medals won in Buenos Aires in 1951.
This achievement also allowed Peru to achieve its best historical position (10 out of 41 countries in the competition), as well as the most gold medals (11), silver medals (7) and bronze medals (23) in a single event.
