This year is the second in a row that the Spirit Awards, held earlier the day before the Oscars, have been moved forward in the calendar to land during Oscar voting. Three of the five nominees for “Spirit Best Feature” are in the running for the same award at the Academy Awards: Lead nominee “Everything Everywhere All at Once”, “Tár” and “Women Talking”. There is also overlap in the acting, directing, and screenwriting categories
Among other things to note today: The main and supporting roles of the Spirits in film and television are gender-neutral for the first time.
Also on the TV side are Abbott Elementary, The Bear, Severance and Station Eleven with three nominations each.
