Hugh Jackman returns as Wolverine in Deadpool 3 as release date is confirmed

Deadpool 3 has been officially announced, and as part of the news, it seems it has been confirmed that Hugh Jackman will be returning as Wolverine.

The news was announced by a very goofy Twitter video of Deadpool himself, Ryan Reynolds, teasing the antihero’s first appearance in the MCU. Hugh Jackman appears in the background of the video and says “yeah sure why not” about his return as Wolverine in Deadpool 3. A stirring rendition of “I Will Always Love Hugh” plays in the background.

The clip ends with Wolverine-style claws smashing a Roman “III” through the Deadpool logo, along with a September 6, 2024 release date.

While today marks the first official Deadpool 3 announcement, the project has been teased for quite some time. Marvel boss Kevin Feige said earlier this year that he wants to “improve it like we were able to do with Civil War and Infinity War and Ragnarok.” A year ago, Feige promised that the film would also be R-rated.

Notably, Deadpool 3 will mark the first appearance of its titular anti-hero, or Wolverine, as part of the current MCU, something only made possible since Disney’s acquisition of Fox. Several MCU projects have raised mutants in general and the X-Men in particular since the launch of Marvel Phase 4, and Patrick Stewart even appeared as a version of Professor X in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
