Hungary: Officially invested, Orban castigates the “suicide” of the West

Hungarian nationalist Prime Minister Viktor Orban on Monday, May 16, denounced the West’s “suicide” and recalled his “red line” on sanctions against Russia during his inauguration ceremony outside parliament.

A “wave of suicides” is shaking “the Western world” that is “experimenting with the big exchange program,” explained the 58-year-old head of government, referring to the thesis that European populations would be replaced by non-European immigrants.

“Last bastion” of the “conservative Christian Occident”

This “program wants to replace vulnerable Christian children with migrants from other civilizations” and “I see the folly” of gender theories in the same way, he added. A big winner in early April’s general election, he had previously been sworn in for a fourth consecutive term after being re-elected in parliament with 133 out of 199 votes.

Viktor Orban portrayed Hungary, a “harbour of common sense” where “God’s blessings remain important”, as the “last bastion of the conservative Christian West with Poland” while “the EU has given up”. Two opposition parties walked out of the Chamber, calling the new government “illegitimate” after 12 years of building what Viktor Orban called an “illiberal” state, while international organizations for their part denounced an “authoritarian drift”.

Rejection of EU sanctions

As dissatisfaction with Budapest’s blocking of the oil embargo project grows in the EU, Viktor Orban, who has grown closer to Russian President Vladimir Putin in recent years, reminded that the “threatening energy security” remains “a red line” that must not be exceeded. Hungary has rejected the sixth package of sanctions over a lack of guarantees to keep its supplies intact, and on Monday put the cost of stopping Russian oil purchases at between €15 billion and €18 billion.

Despite this discord, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen took to Twitter to “congratulate” him on his “re-election” and said she looked forward to “together successfully tackling the unprecedented challenges” facing the European Union (EU). For his part, the senior EU leader reiterated his desire for his country “to remain a member of the EU for the coming decade”.

He also judged that Hungary’s membership in NATO was “an existential issue”, but regretted the current escalation regarding its Ukrainian neighbor. “The Russians launched a so-called military operation and the United States decided to fund Ukraine with unlimited military equipment and materiel, resulting in the worst possible combination,” he said.
