The death toll from Hurricane Otis, which hit Mexico and Acapulco in particular, has risen to 48. This was announced by the Mexican government, saying that most of the victims died from drowning and that six people were still missing. The hurricane, classified as “extremely dangerous,” began hitting the coast of Mexico on Tuesday night with wind speeds of 270 kilometers per hour.
The hurricane damaged over 270,000 homes and 80 percent of all hotels in the region. Initial estimates put the damage at $15 billion in a region whose economy relies heavily on tourism.
