Nebraska suffered a 2-1 loss in 10 innings to top-seeded, 23rd-ranked Maryland Thursday night in Omaha in a weather-related game in front of 8,340 fans at Charles Schwab Field.

Nebraska (32-22-1) had one run from four hits, while Maryland (39-19) had two runs from eight hits and two penalties.

Jace Kaminska got off to a good start on the mound, enabling a six-hit run in six innings of work. The junior knocked out five Terrapins and walked two. Corbin Hawkins delivered a one-hit inning before Shay Schanaman pitched the final 2.2 innings. Schanaman fell to 3-6 this season after conceding a one-hit run with two strikeouts.

Dylan Carey led the Huskers 2-2 while Max Anderson and Brice Matthews scored. Matthews grabbed second place early in the ninth inning, becoming the first player in school history with at least 20 home runs and 20 stolen bases in a season.

The Huskers placed two runners with an out in the first run after Casey Burnham reached from a fielding error and a single from Anderson, but the Big Red failed to bridge a run.

Maryland loaded the bases up with a two-out walk late in the first set, but Kaminska escaped the jam with his first strikeout of the night.

Josh Caron was plunked and Ben Columbus walked four pitches to put the no-out runners in first and second place. Carey got the pair over the line with a sacrifice throw before Cole Evans’ RBI groundout scored the second and Caron gave the Huskers a 1-0 lead in the second half.

Kaminska allowed two hits in the next four innings while keeping the Terrapins off the field to keep the Huskers 1-0 lead in the fifth inning.

The Terrapins started the end of the fifth round with a double from Kevin Keister on the left field line. Keister advanced to third base with a groundout before coming to a 1-1 tie with an RBI single from Matt Shaw down the middle.

The Huskers had a runner first and one in the top of the seventh before the game was halted at 8:27 p.m. due to a lightning-fast delay. The teams resumed play after a delay of one hour and 33 minutes. Carey moved up to second after Evans grounded out to continue the action while Matthews was seeded first and second with two outs. The Terrapins escaped the threat with a strikeout to keep the Big Red off the field.

Evans came on with a two-out error, followed by Matthews’ single in the middle, giving the Huskers first and third at the bottom of ninth place. Matthews clinched second place, becoming the first 20-20 player in program history, but the two got stuck in second and third as teams finished near the bottom of ninth place.

The two teams traded scoreless half-innings while the Huskers and Terrapins ended up tied at the bottom of the 10th pitch. Schanaman busted with the two batters he faced before Nick Lorusso’s walk-off solo home run to the left secured a 2-2 win for the top seeded Terrapins.

Nebraska meets eighth-seeded Michigan State in an elimination game tomorrow night at 7 p.m. at Charles Schwab Field in Omaha.
