Hybrid workplace: Young people are more marginalized than their peers

The gap between the generations invites hybrid jobs. According to a survey, Gen Z and Y are two to three times more likely to be rejected at virtual meetings than Gen X and Baby Boomers.

Individually, Gen Xers and Baby Boomers were twice as likely to say they never felt left out of a conversation.

However, more than two in five people from Z and Y (41%) admitted that turning on their cameras during meetings makes them feel “as engaged as they do in the office.”

For them, it’s a necessary evil, the survey says, because more than two in three workers feel the pressure to turn on their cameras during meetings every day.

The study was published in July 2023, while hybrid mode jobs are still very popular, especially among young people. In fact, 6% of baby boomers come into the office five days a week, compared to 0% of Zs others. However, that doesn’t stop them from feeling more left out than the average baby boomer.

The survey was conducted by the Danish-American company Jabra, which specializes in audio products, among 1,845 participants.
