Hyundai unveiled the design for its next-generation KONA models on Monday. Instead of trying to make it look like just another gas-powered car, the automaker introduced elements to accommodate the direction the auto industry is moving – towards electric vehicles.
Hyundai is bold with the new EV-inspired 2024 KONA design
After its first pure electric vehicle, the IONIQ 5, was praised for its “bold, futuristic” design, Hyundai is bringing the EV look to its KONA lineup.
Hyundai unveiled its first electric KONA to customers in Korea and Europe in 2018, and opened US orders for the 2019 model. Although the electric KONA was redesigned last year, including a new front fascia, it still incorporated a minimalist look inherited from its gas-powered predecessors.
The all-new Hyundai KONA takes the opposite approach, implementing an EV-first approach. Hyundai started with the EV variant to bring its modern elements to the full range of KONA vehicles, adapting them for different powertrain options.
SangYup Lee, Executive Vice President and Head of Hyundai Design Center said:
Upgraded with KONA’s unique character, the all-new KONA confidently expresses its bold and dynamic presence. KONA has evolved in every way to embrace an even wider spectrum of diversity and become a true lifestyle supporter.
The new KONA is slightly larger at around 4.25m, making it 150mm longer than the previous generation. It was also 25 mm wider and 60 mm longer in wheelbase.
The most striking new feature is the seamless horizon lamp that runs the length of the vehicle’s nose, giving it a bolder, more aggressive look than previous models. The electric Kona features a pixelated front light bar, a Hyundai first, a 19-inch pixel-inspired alloy wheel design and black, enveloping lines.
Hyundai features a “living room” interior that offers practical features and a personalized driving experience. A floating module and 12-inch wide displays give a high-tech appearance with additional ambient lighting.
More details on the 2024 Hyundai KONA are expected in the coming months, including pricing and powertrain specs. stay tuned for more

Electrek’s take
The new design of the Hyundai Kona is a significant upgrade in my opinion. The updated “EV-derived” look gives it a dynamic off-road feel.
The bold, futuristic design incorporated into the IONIQ 5 has paid off tremendously for them, so why not use elements of that in the KONA too? Hyundai has become the fastest-growing volume brand in the US behind Tesla over the past three years, and for good reason. They look to the future with their vehicles, providing consumers with stylish options designed for the new era of electric vehicles.
